In case we haven’t formally met, I’m Jessie Ginsburg, M.S., CCC-SLP.
Let me tell you my story...
Before there was the Inside Out Sensory Certificate for SLPs… there was a confused and defeated therapist (that would be me).

That’s when I discovered that in order to make a difference, not only in a child's communication skills but in their life, I needed to think in a new way.
I did a "brain dump" of everything I knew about working with autistic children.

Without regulation, climbing the staircase from the “downstairs brain” to the “upstairs brain” where communication is possible — is impossible.
I knew I needed to help my kids climb the language staircase and reach their “Optimal Learning Zone”...
It was the only way to open up the doors to communication.
There was just one problem…
MANY OF MY KIDS HAD A SUITCASE FULL OF SENSORY NEEDS, AND I DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO ADDRESS THEM.
And if you can’t address their sensory needs, then you can’t get them regulated…
Which meant that I’d have to either “trial-and-error” my way through sessions with slow-to-no progress…
Or I’d have to shamefully tell their parents:
“I’m sorry, I can’t help your child because I’m not sure how to get them regulated”
…and send them off to an OT like a part on a conveyor belt.
And so “trial-and-error” is what I did.
A LOT.
I STARTED IMPLEMENTING PLAY-BASED THERAPY STRATEGIES. DOING FUN MOVEMENT ACTIVITIES — AND SOME OF WHAT I DID WORKED!
But my new strategies were only effective sometimes, and I couldn’t be sure WHY they worked with some kids and not with others.
Why does this child respond well to this environmental modification — and this child doesn’t?
Why… when I bounce them on my knee?
Why… when I talk to them this way, or that way?
Why… why… why…???
AND BECAUSE I COULDN’T ANSWER “WHY” — MY THERAPY RESULTS CONTINUED TO BE INCONSISTENT
It was bad enough feeling like I didn’t know how to do my job.
But even worse, I hated how hard I was struggling to help some of my kids!
